Emergency Planning

Whenever you are attacked, you should:

  • Understand the cycle of violence and protect yourself when you recognize that another violent episode could occur.
  • Have a room in your house that has a strong lock.
  • Keep a bag or suitcase packed.
  • Hide extra money, car keys, and important documents (such as marriage license, divorce decree, social security cards, and birth certificates) in a safe place so you can get to them quickly.
  • Teach your children or encourage the neighbor to call police during an attack.
  • Have a place for you to go in an emergency (such as a shelter, motel, or home of a friend or relative).
  • As soon as you are able, call the police and get names of the officers in case there is need to have a record of the attack.
  • Leave the house and take the children with you whenever possible.
  • Go to the hospital or ask for medical attention when you are in a safe place.

Victim's Rights

Abuse is never your fault. You are not the cause of your abuser's behavior. You have the right...

  1. Not to be abused.
  2. To leave.
  3. To ask for help.
  4. To make life choices and changes.
  5. To be safe.
  6. To leave.
